Everything started with a meeting held at the city hall, on 28th of February, were the deputy mayor, Flavia Boghiu, invited representatives of local NGO’s, public authorities and members from the civic society that expressed their intention to get involved in providing help to the Ukrainians who were fleeing their country due to the armed conflict that started on 24th of February. As a result of this meeting the "Brasov for Ukraine" Community Centre was opened on March 4 in Brasov city, at CATTIA.
Subsequently, a permanent call-center and an online platform were set up - https://ua.brasovcity.ro/ - made available to Ukrainian refugees, but also to those who wish to offer their help. In support of the refugees from the center came the people of Brasov or the companies that donated products or money, the restaurants that prepared and served hot meals for free, the local volunteers who registered on the voluntarbv.ro platform, or the organizations that have supported these initiatives through various activities.
Focused on the beginning in offering services specific to first response, the center adapted constantly the range of services offered to fit the needs of the Ukrainian population who found shelter in Brasov. From accommodation, hot meals and access to medical services, up to educational & remedial activities, during the past 18 months we faced many challenges, most of them due to the lack of funding or to specific mechanisms of coordination and managing this kind of crisis.
We would like to reflect the importance of collaboration and coordination between public bodies, NGO’s and members of the civic society, as well as the need of a integrated and sustainable approach.
