Abstract

Session Moderator: Semiha İnal
Rountable Community Participants: SCLR Community Representative 1 (Wildfire Zone); SCLR Community Representative 2 and 3 (Earthquake Zone).

The first and last responders in any disaster are the local people and communities living in the affected region. In line with this understanding, the SCLR approach supports the initiatives and projects of local communities in disaster-affected areas through micro-grants, based on the recognition that these communities are best positioned to identify their own needs and challenges. Through this approach, we aim to foster sustainable resilience to disasters by strengthening local capacities, addressing the root causes of vulnerabilities, and supporting locally led mitigation and prevention initiatives against potential crises and disasters.

Aligned with this approach, we are planning to include community members from one wildfire zone and two earthquake zones in the roundtable to share their experiences. They will explain how they designed and implemented community-led initiatives focused on recovery, intervention, and prevention following wildfires and earthquakes in Türkiye, and how they developed coping mechanisms through direct experience with disasters.
