Scholars and practitioners in the field of humanitarian action are increasingly addressing the particular needs and rights of sexual and gender minorities, whose marginalization and exclusion have been well documented. More broadly, they are advancing understandings of the rationale and modalities of greater LGBTQI+ inclusion in not only humanitarian action, but in the Triple Nexus and its other components, namely development assistance and peacebuilding. Nonetheless, empirical studies and theoretical analyses are still in their infancy and much remains to be explored and considered, especially from a comparative perspective. This panel will explore a range of related topics, from a variety of perspectives, that seek to advance knowledge in this area. Potential paper topics include: the inclusion of sexual orientation and/or gender identity and expression in humanitarian policies and planning; the protection of and assistance to LGBTQI+ refugees and internally displaced persons; sexual and gender-based violence against LGBTQI+ individuals; the participation of domestic LGBTQI+ people and organizations in humanitarian action; the challenges of including and/or studying sexual and gender minorities in humanitarian contexts; the intersection of LGBTQI+ identities with other identities or disability; how any of these concerns interact with the challenges of implementing a Triple Nexus approach; and the impact of ongoing changes in the aid landscape on any of the above. Individuals from the Global South are especially encouraged to submit an abstract.
