This roundtable presents the declaration of humanitarian justice that is being developed by the humanitarian observatories of South Asia, DRC, Ethiopia, Latin America and the Caribbean, Libya, Namibia, the Philippines and Central and Eastern Europe.
In a time of increasing destruction of the humanitarian system and its roots in International Humanitarian Law, it has become urgent to develop what constitutes Humanitarian Justice. The notion of humanitarian justice is akin to other ‘Justices’, such as Climate Justice and Disaster Justice, yet is created by affected communities and local humanitarian actors and phrased in terms of specific problems and vocabularies of the field.
The declaration was initiated by humanitarians, development workers and scholars that aim to stand alongside affected communities and want to embrace a transformative journey that takes inspiration from the values of humanity, the wisdom of aid providers working in their own context and the strength of grassroots efforts. Recognizing the perspectives and agency of affected communities, the declaration wants to magnify the many voices that aim for a future grounded in dignity, justice and sustainable change.
The declaration is developed by the 8 humanitarian observatories on the basis of focus group discussions with affected community members and other actors in the context of crisis. During the roundtable, representatives of the observatories will present the declaration, invite communities, civil society groups and private actors to adopt and sign the declaration and engage in discussion about its potential for advocacy for just humanitarian responses.
