| Bio | Dr. Tolga Tören completed his master's degrees at Marmara University (İstanbul), Institute of Social Sciences, Department of Development Economics and Economic Growth (2006), and -as a part of Global Labour University (GLU) - at the University of the Witwatersrand (Johannesburg), Faculty of Humanities, Department of Labour Policies and Globalisation (LPG) (2010). Between 6 September 2010 - 6 October 2010, he studied at the Department of Sociology of University of the Witwatersrand as a visiting researcher for his PhD studies. In 2012, he completed his PhD thesis, entitled “South Africa: From Apartheid to Black Economic Empowerment: Re-articulation of Race and Class upon the Historicity of Capital Accumulation”, at Marmara University, Institute of Social Sciences, Department of Development Economics and Economic Growth. The thesis was given an honourable mention in 2013 under the coverage of Young Social Scientists Award by Turkish Social Sciences Association (TSBD). Between 1 February 2013 - 25 March 2014, Dr. Tören worked at the Faculty of Economic, Administrative and Social Sciences of Toros University (Mersin) as an assistant professor and as the Head of the Department of Economics. Between 26 March 2014 - 26 March 2017, he worked as an assistant professor at the Department of Economics of the Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences of Mersin University (Mersin). During his posts mentioned above, besides his administrative duties, Dr. Tören taught courses in bachelor and master levels on “Introduction to Economics”, “History of Economics”, “Turkish Economy”, “History of Turkish Economy”, “Economic Development” and “World Economy”. Because of the fact that he was one of the signatories of the petition, entitled “We will not be part of this crime”, by the Academics for Peace initiative in January 2016 in Turkey, he was dismissed from his position at Mersin University on 26 March 2017. On 29 April 2017, he was barred from all public jobs through a decree issued by the Turkish government on the same ground, as were many critical scientists in Turkey. Therefore, since mid-May 2017, Dr. Tören has been teaching and researching at the International Centre for Development and Decent Work (ICDD) of the University of Kassel as a scholar at risk. He worked as a guest professor at the Department of Political Science of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Vienna for the period between 1 March 2018 - 5 May 2018. Being involved in Global Labour University (GLU) and Global Partnership Network (GPN) networks, Dr. Tören has been teaching courses in masters level on the following topics: “Theories of Imperialism”, 2020 - 2021 Winter Semester, departments of Global Political Economy and Development (GPED) & Labour Policies and Globalisation (LPG), “Capitalism, Development & Underdevelopment”, 2020 Summer Semester, departments of Global Political Economy and Development (GPED), “Working Class and Resistance in the Age of Globalisation”, 2019 - 2020 Winter Semester, departments of Global Political Economy and Development (GPED) & Labour Policies and Globalisation (LPG), “Labour, Capital and Debates on Welfare and Development in the Age of Globalisation”, 2018 Summer Semester & 2018 - 2019 Winter Semester, departments of Global Political Economy and Development (GPED) & Economic Behavior and Governance (EBG), “Labour Market Policies in a Comparative Perspective: South Africa & Turkey”, 2017 - 2018 Winter Semester & 2018 Summer Semester, departments of Global Political Economy and Development (GPED), Labour Policies and Globalisation (LPG) & Political Science (the University of Vienna). Being interested in development studies, labour studies and (geo)political economy, Dr. Tören has publications and studies on such topics as foreign aid policies with particular focus on the post-Second World War period and on the Marshall Plan and Truman Doctrine in Turkey, international labour movement and overseas labour policies with particular focus on the post-Second World War period in Europe and on the period between 1960 - 1973 in South Africa, capitalist development process of Turkey, capitalist development process of South Africa, labour market policies in Turkey with particular focus on the conditions of Syrian refugees. Dr. Tören is also a ‘Coordinator in International Project Management’, as having certified by Gesellschaft für Nachhaltige Entwicklung (GNE) (Witzenhausen). |
