Climate change Libya The Arab Organization for Human Resources Financing and Capacity Building
This paper examines the impact of climate change on cities in the Gulf of Sirte region in Libya. The Gulf of Sirte, located on the southern coast of the Mediterranean Sea, is rich in natural resources and biodiversity. However, in recent years, the region has faced threats of desertification and population migration due to armed conflicts and poor urban planning. The destruction of agricultural projects, such as the Lud Agricultural Project, has led to the depletion of vegetation and increased aridity. Rising temperatures and the burning of forests have further exacerbated the situation. The weak coordination between government authorities and the presence of small arms among civilians have hindered efforts to combat desertification. Nevertheless, civil society organizations, in collaboration with international agencies, have launched reforestation campaigns in the Gulf of Sirte region. The paper emphasizes the need for stronger government intervention, effective urban planning, and sustainable policies to preserve green spaces and mitigate the effects of climate change in the region.
