Under protection, I look to the protective effect that activities can have, including more Red Cross-specific protection activities such as visiting detainees and restoring family links. A historian by academic training, I care about taking a longer term view to understand the contexts I am engaging with: what explains what is happening now, what is the deep background, including of my own role, in my own cultural history and personal ethic, in its interaction with the other.
