Abstract

This proposed study will examine the complex and often chaotic concept of integration within the Irish context and will seek to define and conceptualise what it is meant by social integration through the perceptions of refugees and host communities in Ireland. This study will also examine the current strategies aimed at promoting integration by government authorities within the EU emergency relocation and resettlement scheme. (European Commission, 2017)
This study will focus on stage three of the process in which refugees are resettled in Ireland (Department of Justice & Equality, 2017) and will analysis whether claims of local engagement and grassroot participation for the integration of refugees is substantiated. This research will place the work of the inter-agency working group under a socio-analytical lens, specifically in the area of social integration & will provide possible solutions or constructive criticism on how to better engage with local communities to ensure better integration between refugees and host communities.
At the IHSA, this research proposal hopes to incite discussion on the refugee crisis in Europe generally and hopes to encourage discussion and the sharing of experiences and approaches to the social integration if refugees in other contexts.
