Abstract

In this paper, I will reflect on my recent attempt to discuss experiences of forced displacement using my own historical research and a corpus of primary sources on Holocaust child-survivors who migrated to Canada in the aftermath of the Second World War. I will explore the possibilities and limitations of this approach and argue that such primary sources can be an efficient way to engage with students about power dynamics, both in aid (who is considered 'worthy' of being help? who gets excluded?) and knowledge production (which stories are being told? who gets to tell these stories?).
