While there has been some recent discussion about IT, data and data analytics in the humanitarian sector, little has been discussed about technology beyond data sciences that is essential for healthcare. For example, diagnostics for diseases remain largely inaccessible to refugee and refugee health centers. Absence of these diagnostics leads to loss of precious life. Furthermore resources that are subsequently spent in disease management could be spared if there are better diagnostics available. This was particularly true during the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic. Similarly, vaccines are unavailable, not just because they are expensive, but also because they cannot be stored in such locations. The goal of this presentation is to understand the barriers in technology development, the ethical challenges in design that is inclusive and identifying ways to overcome these technical, financial and ethical challenges.
