Our paper explores power hierarchies present within humanitarian-academia research partnerships. Through interviews with 32 practitioners and academics who have participated in joint research initiatives, we explore the challenges associated with collaborative research and explore the possibilities of co-production as a means of tackling unequal power hierarchies within the research process. Our findings suggest that similar to other buzzwords in the humanitarian sector, the label of “co-production” is sometimes uncritically applied to any kind of research partnership. We explore what co-production might mean in humanitarian settings and emphasise the importance of centering power within co-produced research in humanitarian settings.
