This presentation, based on the forthcoming publication "Addressing Research Safety and Security in Disaster and Humanitarian Studies," seeks to shed light on an often-overlooked aspect of the risks involved in researching disaster and humanitarian crises. Conducting research in disaster-prone areas involves various risks, from physical dangers, illness, to ethical complexities. Despite the critical significance of research safety and security, formal discussions and systematic literature on this topic are still lacking. Our research aims to fill this gap by providing an overview of the risks present in our field of humanitarian and disaster studies, summarizing existing research on safety and security, and sharing practical strategies for mitigating these risks.
