The Red Cross Red Crescent Global Migration Lab conducts research on topics of critical importance to the provision of humanitarian assistance and protection to migrants in vulnerable situations. In 2024, the Lab established the Africa Migration Research Hub in Kenya. The Hub aims to: (i) contribute to the design and implementation of a coordinated regional research agenda on migration for the RCRC Movement and ensure regional insights are captured in global analyses and recommendations for action; (ii) build the capacity of National RCRC Societies within the region to undertake quality research on migration and to use that research to inform advocacy and programming; and (iii) support the amplification of the voices, lived experience and expertise of migrants in the region to guide and inform advocacy and programmatic action, both internally and externally. Drawing on key lessons learnt since launching the Hub, this presentation will reflect on some of the challenges and opportunities associated with integrating localised research approaches within the RCRC Movement, building equitable partnerships between practitioners and researchers and between local and global actors, and supporting the uptake of locally grounded evidence in regional and global policy and programming. The presentation will draw on insights from the work of the Hub to support the participation of African National Societies in a global research project investigating migrant women and children’s experiences of separation and will also reflect on the Hub’s role supporting capacity building in research for the newly formed East Africa Migration Network.
