Abstract

Despite the UK's government's pledge to create safe and legal routes for those escaping violence, this paper will explore how UK policies and decision maker practices exclude family reunification from conflict zones and/or create additional hurdles. The author, a practicising lawyer who assists refugees in the UK to reunite with their families will provide a detailed analysis of how the UK's policies and practices, from initial application to appeal, prohibit those most in need from reuniting with UK based family members. It will also look at the success of the Ukraine Schemes and contrast them with the Afghan Relocation Assistance Scheme and the lack of scheme for those impacted by the conflicts in Sudan and Gaza. Finally it will look at the need for a specific scheme with an open application process for those in conflict areas to apply to join their direct family members in the UK.
