As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes integral to humanitarian research, ensuring its responsible use is essential to maximize impact and avoid unintended harm. This panel will explore the guiding principles and practical steps necessary for responsible AI deployment in the humanitarian sector amidst reduced funding. Key priorities include ethical and accessible data practices, transparency, explainability, and robust accountability mechanisms with human insight and oversight. Addressing algorithmic bias, strengthening local capacity, safeguarding privacy and human rights, and ensuring robust access are critical for equitable and long-lasting benefits. By embedding these priorities into AI initiatives, humanitarian actors can harness AI technology’s potential to improve design, implementation, decision-making and outcomes while upholding humanitarian principles despite in resource-constrained environments.
