Abstract

The Norwegian Red Cross employs a diverse knowledge production model, conducting and commissioning research and analysis, both nationally and internationally, that is integrated at both strategic and local levels within the organization. The unit also works in partnership with academic research institutions in undertaking and disseminating research along with obtaining grants through various funding streams. The unit endeavours to strengthen local humanitarian systems through providing an evidence base for operational practice and humanitarian diplomacy. The latter objective is, in our understanding, unique amongst the RC3 network. Although the close ties between our analysis and diplomacy work have been successful in driving social change at the political and policy levels, it also presents challenges, such as safeguarding research objectivity. Generating co-produced knowledge is also an aim of the Norwegian Red Cross, with Photovoice being recently utilised within projects. This participatory-action research design empowers participants/co-researchers to visualise their lived experience and disseminate their voices and experiences to a wider audience. Photovoice has been employed in a project concerning health-preparedness and the role of civil society in the Artic region and an ongoing project involves the challenges experienced by refugees and asylum seekers in Norway.
