This paper interrogates the effects of cuts and underfunding in the age of online and born digital archives. Based on recent coalition work to preserve and rescue operational archives, this presentation will sketch out the ethical and practical dimensions of archival silencing, amounting to a practice of erasure. Beyond historical records of the past twenty five years, this issue also concerns the data gathering capability of the 'humanitarian system' and indeed, its very existence.
