Abstract

“Under the Weather” shares powerful, real-life stories from communities on the front lines of the climate and health crisis in Malawi, Burkina Faso, and Somalia. Through the voices of health workers, families, and local leaders, the report reveals how rising temperatures, water scarcity, and displacement are already reshaping lives and straining health systems. While progress has been made, the stories underscore that adaptation efforts remain insufficient. The report supports the need for for intentional, equitable, and community-led investments in order to progress from small scale adaptation into transformative action.

This report directly complements the panel’s focus on the intersection of climate shocks, conflict, and humanitarian health delivery. By grounding the discussion in lived experiences from African communities, “Under the Weather” adds a human dimension to the research and innovations being presented. It reinforces the urgency of climate-informed, conflict-sensitive health strategies and highlights the importance of community leadership, local engagement, and diversified financing—key themes echoed in the panel’s exploration of scalable solutions from Ukraine to South Sudan. Together, the report and the panel offer a holistic view of how we can build more resilient health systems in a climate-affected humanitarian future.
