Abstract

"Aid recipients are probably the weakest link in the long and twisted chain of humanitarian aid stakeholders. But their rising voices and actions are becoming more visible and critical of the growing inhumane and dehumanizing treatment meted out to them by belligerents and others involved in man-made disasters.

From Ghouta to Gaza and from Juba to Sanaa, humans who are assigned the subject position of civilians, beneficiaries, and/or victims, are demanding that they be involved, respected, consulted and spoken to rather than at. So far, their actions have been sometimes desperate, but mostly expressions of anger, indignation, cynicism, and palpable desire for change in their dehumanizing predicament and objecting to how the humanitarian system has been compromised.

This paper will describe some of these actions in different contexts with a focus on Syria, Palestine and Yemen. It will look at how these actions are organized, what they demand, their successes/failures, and how they should/could be engaged with by other actors from the advocacy community and those seeking to fix the aid system around the globe. Ultimately, even if they are the 'recipients', this paper would argue that without their pressure and active participation, it could be almost impossible to reverse the increasing inhumanity around the world or fix the aid system that badly needs reform."
