Abstract

Gun fire, gender based violence, injustice, war, poverty, human rights abuse are just some of the regular experiences faced by humanitarian workers. In decades of providing care for humanitarian workers we've identified ’symptoms’ the organisation faces in regards to being traumatised. Subconsciously, an organisation can begin to manifest some of the trauma it is part of responding to, internally in its own structures and organisational culture. We know that trauma can be debilitating for an individual if the right support structures are not in place, so what does this mean for an organisation?
This paper will identify principles of what is means to be a trauma informed workforce and how organisations need to be proactive and preventative in order to protect themselves from becoming a traumatised organisation.
