This paper seeks to put into historical perspective the role and sociability associated with demotic humanitarians - local activists and networks of humanitarian work which shape much of the lesser quantified humanitarian sector. Looking at historical agents in the locality - this paper seeks to explore the specificity of this history, the potential these micro NGO workers offer and also the limitations of this large sector of humanitarian work. It is based on archival work and oral history in West Yorkshire.
