Protection actors can pursue a variety of approaches when trying to convince armed actors to better protect civilians from harm. One of these is to support communities in their own efforts to engage with armed actors and influence their behavior. This paper is part of an ongoing research project supported by UK Research and Innovation. It discusses different approaches to preventive protection and presents emerging results from research with armed actors, communities and protection actors in Iraq.
