This chapter examines the evolution and application of “nexus thinking” in the humanitarian sector, tracing its development from the humanitarian–development nexus to the triple humanitarian–development–peace (HDP) triple nexus. It discusses how the approach has moved from theory into policy and practice, shaping donor agendas and NGO programmes. The chapter explores the promises and challenges of the HDP nexus, introduces the idea of an “inverse nexus” where development connects back to humanitarian response, and reflects on emerging debates about expanding the nexus to include climate change and migration.
