This panel will delve into the ethical considerations, motivations, and best practices of humanitarian aid workers. What kind of ethical dilemmas do local, national, and/or international humanitarian aid workers face in the field today? How do they navigate these dilemmas individually, collectively, and systemically? Taking into account the contemporary geopolitical and environmental challenges to the work of humanitarian aid workers, submissions should explore the intersection of altruism and professional ethics, the education and training required for effective humanitarian action, and/or the governance and organization of humanitarian systems. Contributions that critically explore issues such as professionalisation, effectiveness and impact, and donor or host country relations as they relate to humanitarian aid workers are welcome. The panel will highlight innovative technologies and knowledge-sharing practices that impact the humanitarian aid worker experience. Emphasis will be placed on the psychosocial well-being of aid workers and the ethical dilemmas they face in the field. The panel welcomes contributions of innovative theory- and/or practice-based approaches as well as research rooted in the experiences of humanitarian aid workers and/or affected communities.
