As the humanitarian sector is facing an unprecedented crisis – a funding crisis but also a crisis of legitimacy and purpose – various calls are made to rethink the system and its practices. These shocks to the system, adding up to major conflicts and crisis, make 2025 seem like a major turning point for humanitarian action. While the sector grapples with how to survive, adapt, and reinvent itself, this poses fundamental questions to humanitarian studies and research. This roundtable gathers leaders of research entities in academia, NGOs and think tanks – humanitarian researchers and practitioners, working at the intersection of knowledge production and practice, to discuss these challenges. What is the current state of humanitarian research production and diffusion? Where does it happen and has it evolved since 2000? As researchers working at the crossroad of research and international aid with long-term investments in different geographic and thematic areas, how can we meaningfully contribute to ongoing exchanges – in a context of fast-developing events and responses? What are the direct impacts of these new trends and challenges on our work and missions? And how can we preserve academic and practitioner cooperation and dialogue in a context of ever-increasing shrinkage of spaces dedicated to critical thinking, self-reflection and open discussions worldwide?
